The Marina District was a fill-in, created by using debris from the 1906 earthquake and landfill. This is why it was the worst hit area during the 1989 earthquake.

See, this guy, John McLauren, who created Golden Gate Park, was quite a character. One night he and a buddy stole this barge that had all the plants for the Japanese center, moved it into the lake---and sank it! And, when they put a tower with that new-fangled thing, electricity, John gave some dynamite sticks to his gardeners, and that was the end of the electric tower in Golden Gate Park.
The Marina District has some nice art-work from the 1920's Art Deco period.
