Fort Mason

Congressman Phillip Burton, who was largely responsible for creation of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is quoted as having said “The only way to deal with speculators is to kill them”. He is honored with this larger-than-life statue in Fort Mason. The Aquatic Park is named after his wife Sala.

“Bene” Bufano, the artist who created this statue, was so upset with President Woodrow Wilson entering World War I that he chopped off his trigger finger and sent it to him. Not a good idea.
