Dia Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is usually celebrated on or about November 1st. It is a blend of Aztec and European beliefs going back five hundred years. In the stricter sense, families visit the graves of the dead and decorate them with flowers candles and earth. There is also a picnic at the gravesite which might have tamales, bread, cookies and chocolate. The family may also build an altar decorated with flowers, primarily marigolds and chrysanthemums. The foods the deceased liked may be added along with tobacco and alcohol, particularly Mescal. In San Francisco the event culminates with a parade.
